Do you dye your hair a lot? I have to admit I used to until I started doing some research. It turns out there are a lot of dangerous chemicals in hair dye that you need to avoid. These toxins have been linked to allergies, skin irritation, hormone disruption, and even cancer. At least two women have died using traditional hair dye. Are you dying for beautiful hair?
Dangerous Ingredients in Hair Dye
Here are the ingredients that put your health at risk each time you buy a box of hair dye:
1. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS/SLES)
Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES) is an emulsifier that has been shown to be toxic to your organs and nervous system and cause DNA changes that may result in the eventual development of cancer.
2. P-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
This clear chemical is designed to keep your hair bright between washings but it can have some serious consequences for your health. Studies have shown it to be toxic to your immune system, nervous system, liver, and kidneys. And if you have any existing breathing problems such as asthma, it could worsen your condition.
Persulfates can cause painful skin blistering and rashes if you’re allergic or sensitive to them. Also, inhaling persulfates may contribute to the development of asthma and chronic lung damage.
4. PEG-3 Cocamide
The National Library of Medicine describes this foaming hair dye ingredient as a “known human immune system toxicant”. Why would you want to put anything like that on your head?
Resorcinol is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that has been linked to hypothyroidism, infertility, and miscarriages.
6. Hydrogen Peroxide
In small doses, hydrogen peroxide is not harmful. In the amount that is in hair dye however, it can cause DNA changes that may lead to cancer. It may also cause digestive, lung, and nervous system damage.
Ammonia is a known skin and upper respiratory irritant.
8. Lead Acetate
Lead acetate is what causes the gradual darkening of brunette hair dyes. This ingredient has been linked to both nervous system and brain damage.
4-ABP is a common byproduct produced by the manufacture of hair dye. Studies have linked it to the development of cancer.
10. Aminomethyl Propanol
This pH adjuster is also a known carcinogen.
There is no reason to make yourself sick just to look beautiful. There are plenty of natural hair dyes out there that you can use safely. In my next blog, I will go over a few that I have found and like.
