I used to dye my hair all the time. Blonde. Red. Blue. It was ridiculous. I wasn’t really worried about damaging my hair. I thought that as long as I used the right conditioner, my hair would be just fine. It turns out I was wrong. There are a lot of dangerous chemicals in salon and boxed hair dye. That’s why since then I’ve been turning to natural hair dye. It’s been a fun experiment that my daughter is even getting into now!
Top Natural Hair Dyes
Most of these natural hair dyes are very easy to find and use and they’re really inexpensive.
To Go Blonde
- Lemon Juice
To go blonde the fun, natural way, turn to organic lemon juice. Put ¼ of a bottle of organic lemon juice into one ½ cup of warm water. Spray until your hair is completely saturated. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse off. Condition to avoid drying. (For even blonder results, sit in the sun while you’re waiting for your hair to dry).
Chamomile is a great-smelling way to lighten your hair the natural way. Steep 10 chamomile teabags in boiled water for 30 minutes. Wash and dry your hair. Saturate your hair with the cooled tea and leave it in your hair for 20 minutes. Rinse. Repeat if desired.
To Go Brunette
If you’re looking for a darker shade, brew a strong pot of coffee. Wait for it to cool to room temperature. Saturate your hair thoroughly and leave it in for 30 minutes before rinsing it out. Repeat if you want a darker shade.
- Black Tea
You can also darken your hair naturally by using black tea. Place about 10 teabags in boiled water and allow it to steep for 30 minutes. Saturate your hair thoroughly and leave in for 30 minutes. Rinse off the mixture and repeat if desired.
To Go Red
- Cranberry Juice
For best results, use 100% pure cranberry juice. Get into the tub, pour the juice throughout your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes. Rinse off and repeat for a darker color.
Kool-Aid, in my opinion, has absolutely no place in the human body. The stuff is pure junk. As a hair dye, however, it’s pretty cool. Mix some red Kool-Aid together without the sugar and saturate your hair in the bathtub. Wait for 30 minutes. Rinse it out.
When you dye your hair naturally, you can make an investment in your health. Plus, it’s a great way to experiment with your look.
